 National and Kapodistrian University of Athens The Department of Political Science and public Administration started to operate independently in 1982, as part of the Faculty of Law, Economics and Political Science of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Its mission is to promote the study of Political Science in its various aspects. There are 40 full time professional staff members who teach and conduct research in Political Analysis, Social Theory and Sociology, International and European Studies, Public Administration, as well as 4 teaching assistants.

The Laboratory of Political Communication of the University of Athens is a Research Centre attached to the Department.

 Calliope Spanou  Calliope Spanou

The academic involved in this research project is Mrs Calliope Spanou (Docteur d'Etat, University of Amiens, France), assistant professor of Administrative Science.

Research Interests:
Dr Spanou's work focuses on public administration (administrative modernisation policies, citizen - administration relations, environmental policies, adjustment to European integration etc). She has been involved in numerous cross-national projects and working groups. More particularly she has been part of a 5-countries research group on the "Conditions for integration of community environmental policies: a social, cultural and political problem at the local level" (France, Germany, United Kingdom, Spain and Greece; 1993-1995), funded by the DG XII of the Commission of the EU (R & D, Environment and Climate). Dr Spanou has also taken part in working groups on the National Coordination of EU policy (Nuffield College, Oxford) (1998-99). She has taught as a visiting professor at the Universities of Paris II and Versailles - Saint Quentin en Yvelines (France) (1995-6 and 1996-97). Her professional experience includes pre-entry and in-service training of civil servants being continuously involved in the activities of the National Centre of Public Administration (Athens) in the capacity of advisor and trainer (1989-). Dr Spanou has also worked at the Public Management Committee of the OECD (Paris, 1988).

Calliope Spanou has published books and articles in Greek, English and French. Closely linked to this project are the following: "European integration in administrative terms", Journal of European Public Policy, 3/1988; La qualité des eaux dans l'Union Euorpéenne.
